BOTANICAL ART

OBSERVING STRUCTURE

Sometimes we make art to tell stories for which there are no words.
Sometimes we make art to comfort ourselves and ease our anxiety.

Sometimes art is the product of circumstance.
in this work, I use the structure and complexity of bird’s nests and feathers to examine the
significance of memory, home and loss. They describe place, emptiness and the passage of time.

SHELTER REMNANT

20” x 16” pencil on paper
Collection of the Woodson Art Museum

Exploring concepts of loss and the passage of time, Shelter Remnant is an example of a structure built and shaped to
suit the specific needs of those who once dwelt within.

Stark and lonely, it is a response to change and the
memory of place.

DETAILS OF PLACE

20” x 16” pencil on paper

Details of Place examines the significance of home and
of leaving. Whispering of finality and change, it suggests
that a sense of place endures through memory.

Faded and fragile, it signifies the transient nature
of existence.

TRANSIENCE

20” x 16” pencil on paper

Transience  symbolizes  change  and  the  ephemeral
beauty  of nature.  Tranquil  and  empty,  it  quietly
alludes  to  past  events and  the  continued  progress
of  existence,  suggesting  that  we will  always  be
attached  to  our  sense  of  place  in  this  world
through  memory.

THE COMPLEXITY OF HOME

20” x 16” pencil on paper
private collection

Homes are often complicated and filled with issues of
security and interdependence. The Complexity of Home
reflects the instinct to seek refuge and connection.

Vacant, it speaks with love and remembrance of the

places called home.

RELIC

20” x 16”  pencil on paper

Time is measured by change. Relic is an expression
of remembrance and the nature of existence.

Intricate and frail, it represents old voices,
understanding and acceptance.

REPOSE

20” x 16”  pencil on paper

Sometimes  only  an i mage  can  adequately  express  an  idea
or feeling. Repose  speaks  of  serenity  and  peace  while  capturing    the  nest's  complexity  and  fragility.
